Masterworks Gala

sonic evocation

Friday, January 30, 2009
8:00 pm

Jordan Hall, New England Conservatory
30 Gainsborough St., Boston, MA

Mendelssohn  The Hebrides Overture

Barber   Canzonetta for Oboe and Strings

Sibelius   Spring Song, Op. 16

Bartok   Concerto for Orchestra

Andrew Price, oboe

New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall is world-renowned for its superb acoustics and intimate listening experience. The orchestra becomes the concerto soloist & the concert hall becomes an instrument in this evocative program.

Commissioned and premiered by Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1944, Bartok's symphonic opus highlights individual musicians throughout the orchestra. ASO's principal oboist Andrew Price performs Samuel Barber's exquisite aria for solo oboe and string orchestra. In a change of program, Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima has been replaced by Sibelius' lush Spring Song and Mendelssohn's Hebrides overture.
